 Affordable LDRs

Long-distance relationships can be frustrating and a lot of this frustration comes from the sheer expense of sustaining a relationship: phone bills, train tickets, postage of romantic gifts – it all adds up to an intimidating amount. But there are ways to ease the strain on your wallet or purse. Whether you’re in Sheffield dating online with a Londoner or vice versa, it’s time to save money on your relationship – it will make it that little bit less frustrating! Here are ten money-saving tips for affordable long-distance relationships…

Phone contract
Communication can be the biggest cost of an LDR. Firstly, make sure you’re on the right mobile contract – it’s an unpleasant shock to see those unexpected zeros on your bill. Be on the lookout for deals such as Orange magic numbers and unlimited minutes to certain people.

Internet chat
If possible, try not to use your phone for long calls. Instead get on the internet and do it all for free. You can even find love online free nowadays. Skype, Facebook Chat and MSN Messenger are all platforms for free online communication, with the bonus of webcam use.

Planning ahead
When it comes to travel, the further in advance you book the more you save. Plan your next few trips in your diary and book tickets as soon as they are released usually ensure you get the cheapest price, so get organised.

Travelling inconveniently
You can also save by buying off-peak tickets or planning journeys at unsociable times when there is less demand and tickets are cheaper.

Don’t drive
If you are organised enough about booking travel there should never be any need to drive. Petrol has reached such a ridiculous price that travelling by train or bus or even plane will always be cheaper.

Not spending money
If you live so far apart that there’s no getting around the expense of travel, it’s time to start saving up for your visits. Although some people draw up weekly budgets when saving, I prefer to just go with the mantra ‘don’t spend money.’ Only spend on the absolute essentials and you’ll be amazed at how much you can save.

Cutting something out
Think of one little luxury you’re in the habit of affording yourself. It could be that bottle of posh wine with your Sunday lunch, that weekly pedicure or that morning super-size latte. Cut one thing out and put all the money you save towards your LDR.

Home-making lunches
Eating out in your lunch hour is a very expensive habit. Making packed-lunches is a great way to save and you’ll probably find yourself eating and feeling healthier.

Lighter shopping
The average person throws away a third of the food they buy. Be stricter with your food shopping and also try and slim down on the amount of clothes, shoes and other items you buy.
