Me and Martijn met on a popular online game a few years back. We got to know each other as friends, and were close for a couple of years, but never anything more than that, as I was in a relationship, and my then-boyfriend knew him quite well too. We chatted online regularly, and had voice chats while playing the game, which later also became webcam chats too, but always with my then-boyfriend included. We even visited Holland together and met Martijn and other dutch friends, and I knew I had some feelings for Martijn, but I was keeping them very deeply buried. Finally, after 2 years, Martijn confessed that he was in love with me, and I knew I felt very strongly too. I broke up with the boyfriend, and moved home. It was quite a big risk I felt I was taking, because Martijn was 30 and I was 19, and he was in Holland while I was in England...it felt like a big gamble, but it was time for the previous relationship to end, and I needed to see how things were for me and M!

Shortly afterwards, I visited Martijn again to see how things were. And they were fantastic, we just clicked perfectly. We have so many interests in common, we enjoy similar things, and we both have similar aims in life - but there are enough differences to keep things very interesting! I feel like with him it isn't just feelings of ''love'', I connect on every level, intellectual, physical and emotional. We have really great conversations, keep each other motivated, and unlike my previous relationship, there is more give and take, we try and help each other and support each other. I think that's one of the best things about falling for a friend.

I have spent a total of 3 months out of our 7 month relationship in Holland with Martijn, and it has been a brilliant Summer, filled with fun trips, great friends and new people. I've even picked up a little Dutch, and feel like it has been a unique experience. Our families are both very supportive, and what with the cheap, fast flights, we are in a better position than many. Also since I was on my gap year, I could take the time out to visit, whereas many have to work.

Now the hard part begins, because I have just returned from Holland and am about to go off to university to begin my 3 year BA in English Literature. Sometimes I worry what my peers will think of my unusual relationship, but then I think that what really matters is how we feel! Martijn is very supportive of my ambitions and wishes, and wants me to live my life, but it means that we are going to find it difficult to see each other except for in school holidays, and perhaps the occasional weekend in between depending on my part time job situation. He is going to come over to England and stay with my family for Christmas, and I know it will be great, even though that is nearly 4 months away. I'm also looking forward to studying, and I'm an independent person, so for me being apart from him is not a negative thing, since I can focus on my studies and my own needs, and he can sort out the things he needs to sort out. But on difficult or stressful days, I naturally wish I could hug him again. Skype is great, and our phone plans allow us to text and call each other sometimes.

I think that for me, the plusses of this relationship far outweigh the negatives, and if you find somebody who really stimulates you and makes you happy, you can endure being without them for the short term as long as there is an end in sight. You have to be a very unique person to thrive in a long distance relationship, communicate, trust, and be strong, and BOTH of you have to be on the same page! But I really believe that we are a couple who can do it, and I'm determined to make it work!
