After 16 months of separation I'm pleased to report that my gf and I are going to be together very soon. She's managed to get a student visa and we'll be moving in together in 2010.
When we embarked on our journey we didn't know if it was going to work - but we were determined to give it a chance. It was that clear focus - not just desperation that I think helped us in the beginning. We then set milestones on the first few months and the events thereof. It helped us keep track of things; look forward, and not dwell on the distance.
We didn't always get it right but we chose to live our lives outside of the relationship as well as in it. We remained faithful dispite the envitable loneliness and attention that anyone would get. We were open and honest, and dealt with anything a normal couple would: jealousy, communication breakdowns, arguments and misunderstandings.
Sometimes it's effort, sometimes it's just patience.
Good luck to anyone reading this - and don't be afraid of giving it a chance. It may pay off for you both, or it may just be a great life lesson of your own.
