Hey! I recently got married to the man I was in a long distance relationship with for three years. We were in different countries too. It was a long, difficult road, but we both knew that marriage was the goal, and I think that really kept us going. I mean, we both knew that we were both very serious. There were visits about twice a year (either way), and we talked online a lot (on the phone sometimes, but out of country gets pricey). Letters took too long to arrive, so internet was best. But we talked almost every day.
So, I think the three most important things for us were, good and frequent communication, a deep level of trust, and knowing that there was a future. If I wasn't sure I wanted to marry him (almost from the start), I don't think it would have lasted.
Hope that helps!
